In 2016, Manufacturing Solutions Group was contracted by the National Park Service to aid in the design, tooling and manufacturing of a Turf Protection System for the 2017 Inauguration of President Donald J. Trump. The NPS had just finished a $40 million renovation of the National Mall and wanted to implement an advanced strategy to protect the new national lawn. Our capability of manufacturing large tooling and molded parts made us a perfect contender for the job, and we were enthusiastic to accept the task.
We immediately got to work on this huge project. We were excited to tackle such a project, because it would showcase all facets of our capabilities – from design, to tooling, to manufacturing. It would also demonstrate our ability to complete a finished product from start to finish, as well as showcase our ability to handle very large volume on a tight timeline.
The timeline of the project (5 months) was very tight, and left us no room for error or mistakes. We needed to get this done on the first try. We designed 8 square feet panels from high impact polypro and nylon, totaling a million square feet to cover the National Mall. It was important for the pieces to be easily assembled and disassembled, as well as be resilient enough to not damage the grasss of the National Mall. The customer was extremely happy with the quality of the finished product and the timeline we were able to complete the job in.
